last year, i played on a record for my friend tashi wada, called what is not strange?. it turned out quite delightfully and was released earlier this summer.
the record presents as a performance by a five-piece ensemble, featuring tashi, his partner julia holter, dev hoff on bass, and corey fogel on drums and percussion. oh and me, i played viola. fun! the record presents as a performance by a five-piece ensemble, featuring tashi, his partner julia holter, dev hoff on bass, and corey fogel on drums and percussion. oh and me, i played viola. fun!
however, presentation was not quite reality - there was some studio trickery involved. some bits were recorded live, substantial sections were added and interpolated. (e.g., i tracked without any of the vocal parts.) for the record release show we did significant re-arrangements and rehearsals, with the phenomenal charles curtis on cello filling in for dev.
this fall, there will be a few shows with the full 5-piece, two on the east coast (brooklyn / philly) and one on the west (SF.) i’m looking forward to the process of reconnecting with this music and with these wonderful people.
